Just wanted to let you know that lovely Ruth now has a blog, so we can keep up with her at: http://www.ruthcrafts.blogspot.com/

Ruth, and a handful of other Bluestockings, (including me!), went to the Festival of Quilts last friday. You can read about what happened here:

Have I missed anyone?

Last year, a number of us went to the Festival of Quilts at the NEC. It’s an incredible event, and everyone had a lot of fun (and bought lots of great crafty things…)

Anyways there are plans to do it again this year, so here is the information:

Festival of Quilts, NEC Birmingham,  Thursday 14th August to Sunday 17th August 2008 (10am - 5.30pm)

We are planning at trip for Friday 15th August. Currently there is a car going from London, and at least one car going from Oxford, so it should be possible to sort out lifts for those who are interested. (Petrol costs will be split between those who are car-sharing.)

Tickets on the day are £12, however they can be pre-booked online for £10. There are also mini group tickets for 4 people at £8.50 (though I need to ring up and double check if they can be split over two days, if it turns out that there is a second group going on the saturday who can’t go on the friday.)

There are also group rates for 10+ people, which I can look into if we have enough interest.

Please let me know in comments or via katie (at) oxfordkitchenyarns (dot) com, if you are interested, and we’ll start sorting out tickets.

:)

Despite the predictions of the BBC we had a lovely sunny day for WWKIP day yesterday and so had a pic-knit in the University Parks much to the interest of passers-by and one particularly persistent moorhen who had apparently learnt to recognise the triangular profile of a sandwich from 10 paces.

Every time I picked mine up he was right in there.

We had a good turn out. From the Bluestockings we had Ellen, Katie, and Aliki plus newcomer Meg. Susanne and Lindsey came from the Jam Factory knitters and as-yet-non-affiliated knitter Stephen came along for his first experience of knitting with other knitters. I hope we didn’t scare him too much.

We ate (pretty much everyone who came along sat down and immediately dived into their picnic, probably because it’s a surprisingly long walk to the corner of the Parks where we were), we knit, we played “Guess the Mystery Fibre” (Ellen won a skein of Manos Classico with a perfect score of 10/10, Susanne and Katie were worthy runners up with 8/10). Ellen was a bit disappointed that we wouldn’t be burning the yarn to help find out what it was but apart from the fact that we didn’t have any matches I’d only knit really small swatches so after 2 or 3 people had had a go there really wouldn’t have been anything left of them!

mini swatches

Ellen had a go at spinning her gorgeous spunky eclectic jealous. I’d have been really jealous if I hadn’t had a bag of biffle to come home to. Katie was knitting on the Country Kiddle cardigan.Meg was wondering why she had managed to bring only alpaca over from the States. Aliki was struggling with sheep anatomy and Stephen was swatching for a reversible hoodie. There’s a whole world of men’s patterns out there that I’m totally unfamiliar with and vice versa. I had to keep remembering that there was no reason why a male knitter would automatically have heard of patterns for women’s cardigans such as Tatami and the Minimalist cardigan.

One of the things that came up (among many non-knitting topics) was how to gauge the length of tail needed for a long-tail cast-on. One basic rule of thumb is to make the tail three times as long as the length/circumference of the knitted piece. My usual strategy is to make the tail as long as I think it will need to be, and then make it half as long again. However, I came across another tip here, which is handy for if you’re out without a tape measure or don’t really know how long your piece is going to be, just the number of stitches. I’ve adapted it slightly for when you want to cast on a lot of stitches.

1. Divide the number of stitches you want to cast on by 10. This number is A.
2. Wrap the yarn around the needle in a spiral 10 times.

step 2

3. Measure the length of yarn that was needed to do this. This number is B. (Note: it is difficult to take a photograph whilst measuring yarn. I did actually hold it out straighter than this.)

step 3

If you’re out without your tape measure you can tie a knot in the yarn to mark it.

4. Multiply A by B and that is the length of yarn needed for your tail with a little bit to spare.

step 4

Hope this comes in useful.

Does anyone fancy a trip to the London Stitch & Creative Crafts Show, at the EXCEL building in Islington, on Saturday 1st March?

Tickets are £9, or £7 if we find an offer code (from Simply Knitting magazine, probably, so I will ask my mum, who is a subscriber), and prebook.

My sister, (honourary non-knitter and holder of the only ‘I SEW’ badge), along with some of her knittery friends, and honourar7-if-she-wants-to-be-bluestocking, lovely Jaq (i’m hoping) will also be coming (maybe).

Who’s in?

Go hunting through your stash, the 2nd Annual Oxford Bluestocking Wind-off and Yarn Swap is on!

Date: Saturday 26th January 2008

Location: Katieh’s house, in Headington

Time: 2.30pm onwards (the yarn swap will start at 4.30pm)*

Please feel free to bring cakes or nibbles (I’m going to make a marmalade cake, and a lemon curd cake), yarn you need to wind, and yarn you want to swap!

RSVP: Please comment or email me if you are going to come (and if you’re bringing anyone with you :), so that I have a rough idea of numbers.**

Hope to see you there!

* (Finishing at 8pm at the latest.)

**(Please note, currently this is a Oxford Bluestocking-members only event. It is fine if you’re invite to come along with an existing member, but no non-bluestocking members at this time.)

Just a short post to say Happy Christmas to all the Bluestockings. Hope you have a great time, and that any knitted presents this didn’t cause too much stress. :)

I’m looking forward to Liz getting ‘New Pathways in Sock Knitting’!  (is it weird to be looking forward to someone getting something you already have? i guess just think she’s going to have a huge amount of fun with it. :)

Btw Brambles is now selling Sirdar Eco Wool, in undyed wool colours. It’s £3.20 for 50g, and is very like Rowan Cocoon (except without the mohair), in that it’s a thick, single ply.  Very pretty! (Brambles are open again post-christmas from Friday 28th Dec)

I have been emailing Rachael about the walking stick cosy competition window display. She is making a Christmas tree to hang them on… I think it’s going to look amazing and I was wondering if we ought to have some kind of Xmas event in the shop and if anyone would be up for coming to London? There are decks, musical joy and the haberdashery to play in. I thought some kind of Christmas tea party might be nice; maybe knit some decorations, drink some wine, bring some cake and listen to some music… also we could invite some people along if anyone has people they’d like to invite. I will be driving to any such event and can organise lifts. Is anyone game and what days suit people best?

This is actually more about destashing as I have a couple of ideas for what to do with all those ends of sock yarn that get left over when you just can’t knit any more ribbing:

Oliver’s blanket: Michaela at http://stashbasket.blogspot.com/ is asking for 4 inch squares knit from sock yarn to make into two blankets to raffle off to raise money for Oliver’s Fund. Check out the details on her blog and find out more about Oliver (a little boy with cerebral palsy) and Oliver’s fund at http://www.emma.prettyposies.com/. Mason-Dixon knitting are now running the American side of this appeal and have a good 4 inch square recipe here. You can send in squares until the end of November - the address is on the blog. NOTE: Kay’s square recipe is for GARTER stitch squares - something that I only realised after going back an checking after I knit a beautiful rhombus.

On a more frivolous note I spotted some cool knitted baubles (or rather bauble-cosies) in the Vogue knitting holiday issue and am going to be trying to work out the pattern for that when I’m tired of knitting squares - spheres would be a new challenge!

Hello - I had this idea in the bath!

How about we run an Oxford Bluestockings Secret Santa?  With say a gift limit of £5 - or equivelent from stash or something. The present could be made, or bought, or whatever. I figured we could run the getting of names in early november, so people have plenty of time to sort stuff out.

Anyways you know how this stuff works. What do you think?

I’m not going to be there tonight, so I just wanted to ask people whether they’d be interested in a “knit-in” at my house on either November 3rd. Alternatively the following weekend would be a possibilty. What do you think folks?
